KEY PASSAGE: PHILIPPIANS 2:1-11

Verses for the week:

Monday: Luke 9:23 And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.”

Tuesday: Philippians 2:13 For it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure. (As you go about your day, reflect on your focus. Are you more about seeking your pleasures for you or His?)

Wednesday: 2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. (What are the old parts of you that are still hard to surrender? In what areas do you see him making you new?)

Thursday: Psalm 37:7 Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way, over the man who carries out evil devices! Psalm 50:15 “And call upon me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify me.” Psalm 9:10 And those who know your name put their trust in you, for you, O Lord, have not forsaken those who seek you. (How does patience with God connect to our surrender? What do these verse have in common?)

Friday: Proverbs 23:26 My son, give me your heart, and let your eyes observe my ways. (What are the ways and heart of God that you struggle to surrender to the most? Take heart, that God truly desires relationship with us as we surrender!)

Saturday: Romans 12:2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

Sunday: Isaiah 43:18–19 “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.”

Central Truth - “Surrender is not just an event, its a process, its daily and it is at the very heart of God.”

Discussion/Reflection Questions:

What is it about our culture that makes it so hard to deal with surrender?

Identify your personal struggles with surrender. What are the things that are hardest for you to let go and give to God? In other words—where does “His Kingdom” possibly clash with “Your desires”?

Which scripture from this week spoke to you the most and why? From these readings, what are some of the benefits God has for you when you do surrender?

What freedom might be available to you by surrendering this area of your life?

While it takes an event, a moment in time to get you started, how can you see surrender as a daily process in your life?

Prayer: Think and pray about the area in your life you are reluctant to surrender. If you don’t know, pray that God will reveal that in your life. We all have something. Once you have identified it, pray for trust in God. Do you have a friend, a church, someone you can share this with? We are not meant to do life alone. The journey of surrender is done much better together. Who can you find this week that could journey with you and maybe even weekly do Heart Path together?
